Upper Cedar River Watershed Tour: Flood Control and Farm Conservation Practices: Monitoring Flooding in Iowa: Dr. Nathan Young, Associate Director, The Iowa Flood Center, provides an update on the Center's capabilities to tour participants at the Charles City Library; Charles City's rapids on the Cedar River: An on-sight overview of the Charles City "kayak course" developed on the Cedar River as it flows through town; Urban Flood Control: An on-sight overview of the Charles City "permeable paving" as a flood prevention measure in a flood-prone area of the community; Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program: An on-sight overview of a flood mitigation project on a farm near Nashua, Iowa. Presentation by Shawn Richmond, Iowa CREP Coordinator and Richard Lemke, Chief, Water Resource Board; Wetland Reserve Program: Mike Webster, Wetland Specialist with the NRCS, tells about the wetland reserve program in Iowa; Soil Filtration Demonstrations: Aaron Andrews provides commentary for a soil filtration demonstration including four different soil types and permeable paving. The demonstration was devised at Iowa State University; Nitrogen Bioreactor: An experiment in land drainage and nitrogen filtration is explained by Laura Christianson, a graduate student at Iowa State University, and Ken Kecinovsky, manager of the ISU Experimental Farm at the Norman Borlaug Center near Nashua, Iowa; Farm Tour: Richard Sloan explains conservation practices—provision for water run-off, contouring, use of berms, and other practices—he and his brother use on their farm near Rowley, Iowa. Cedar River Watershed Coalitiion, Steering Committee: Introductions and a presentation by Dr. Matt Helmers, Iowa State University, Ag Drainage Project, on water-retention on land under cultivation. Presentations by Dennis Geomaat, Linn County Conservation Board, and Dean Mueller, Worth County Conservation Board, on measures being taken to afford flood protection. Cedar River Watershed Coalitiion: Rob Hogg, Iowa State Senator, District #19, Cedar Rapids,(1/4/10)  convened a meeting of flood experts and others seeking information and insight to aid him in addressing issues of the 2008 flood during this legislative session. This meeting was a precursor to efforts to form the Cedar River Watershed Coalitiion, the first gathering of which was February 5, 2010.
